Planning a trip to the "Bu" can be overwhelming—between the 21 miles of winding Pacific Coast Highway and the hidden canyon roads, it’s easy to spend more time in your car than on the sand. But what if you could experience the best of this coastal paradise without the stress of navigating traffic?
Whether you're looking for a high-end romantic escape or a perfectly timed photography adventure, this 2-day Malibu itinerary is your roadmap to doing it right.
Ditch the Car: The Secret to a Stress-Free Stay
Most people think a car is a requirement for Malibu, but for the ultimate experience, we recommend the "Ditch the Car" strategy. By booking a room at the iconic Malibu Beach Inn or the hyper-exclusive Nobu Ryokan Malibu, you place yourself in the geographic heart of luxury.
From these Carbon Beach retreats, you are within easy walking distance of the historic Malibu Pier and the premier shopping and dining hub known as Cross Creek (which includes the Malibu Country Mart and Malibu Lumber Yard).
What’s on the Agenda?
Over the next 48 hours, we’ll take you from the mist-covered bluffs of the Santa Monica Mountains to the most coveted dinner reservations in Southern California.
Sunrise & Sunset: Mapping out the best light for your photos.
Wine Country: Afternoon tastings at hidden gems like Cielo Farms or the legendary Old Place.
Elite Dining: Why you need to book Nobu Malibu or Lucky’s Steakhouse weeks in advance.
Day 1: The Iconic "Billionaire’s Beach" Experience
Day one is all about soaking in the classic Malibu lifestyle. By staying on "Carbon Beach," the sound of the Pacific is your morning alarm.
Morning: The Pier & Coffee Walk Start with a short walk to the Malibu Pier. Grab a lavender latte at Malibu Farm Cafe (at the very end of the pier) for the best views in town. It’s the perfect time for photos before the midday marine layer or crowds arrive.
Mid-Day: Retail Therapy at Cross Creek Stroll over to Cross Creek. This isn’t your average mall; the Malibu Country Mart is an open-air collection of high-end boutiques like Chrome Hearts and Oliver Peoples. Keep your eyes peeled, this is the most likely spot in the world to run into a local celebrity grabbing a green juice at SunLife Organics.
Afternoon: Golden Hour at the Caves If you have a car (or a quick Uber), head north to El Matador State Beach. This is the peak photography moment of the trip. The light hitting the sea stacks is world-class.
Evening: Dinner at Nobu or the Local Favorites End your first day with the most famous reservation in California: Nobu Malibu.
Pro Tip: Request a "Deck Table" when you book. Order the Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño and the Black Cod Miso.
Alternatives:
Lucky’s Steakhouse: For a classic American vibe, their Giant Onion Rings and USDA Prime Steaks are legendary, paired with an equally impressive wine list.
Broad Street Oyster Company: If you want something more casual but "insider," head here. While known for world-class seafood, they serve a massively popular yet somehow under-the-radar cheeseburger that is arguably the best in the city.
Day 2: Canyon Sunrises & Mountain Vineyards
Day 2 invites you to discover the wilder side of Malibu. Just a few miles inland, the landscape transforms into a world of jagged volcanic peaks and hidden valley vineyards.
Morning: A Walk Through Hollywood History Trade your flip-flops for hiking boots at Malibu Creek State Park. Known as the "Yosemite of Southern California," this park has served as the backdrop for Planet of the Apes and MASH*. The hike to the old medical unit set is a quintessential Malibu experience. This hike features wide, sun-drenched trails that feel worlds away from the city.
Lunch: Picnic with a View at Point Dume Head back to the coast to grab a fresh lunch. You can go classic with John’s Garden, or refresh with an expert espresso from Blue Bottle Coffee and a gourmet salad to go from the Whole Foods conveniently located at Cross Creek. Take your haul to the cliffs of Point Dume State Beach to watch for gray whales (winter) or dolphins from the bluffs.
Afternoon: Savoring the High-Altitude Terroir As the heat mellows, head into the clouds. Spend your afternoon at Cielo Farms, a Tuscan-inspired estate perched high above the canyons.
The "Local" Secret: If Cielo is booked, or if you want a vibe that is "all too cool," check out The Old Place. Located just down Kanan Rd. past Cielo, this rustic outpost feels like stepping back into a refined version of the Old West, perfect for a bold Syrah and unmatched mountain atmosphere.
Evening: The Grand Finale – Two Ways to Sunset To wrap up your 48-hour journey, choose between two iconic Malibu endings:
The Upscale Classic: Geoffrey’s Malibu – For a truly sophisticated, romantic atmosphere, Geoffrey’s is unmatched. Every table has a panoramic view of the Pacific. It’s "Old Hollywood" luxury at its finest. Perfect for a slow dinner with a bottle of champagne as the waves crash below the cliffs.
The Beachfront Farewell: The Sunset Restaurant – If you prefer a more relaxed vibe, head to the outdoor sand patio at The Sunset, directly opposite Westward Beach. Watching the sun dip below the horizon with your feet (nearly) in the sand is the ultimate way to see the coastline in a completely different light.
